Renovation

We used fabulous professional painters, heating and air professionals, and a great landscaper. Our first order of business was heating this wonderful old house. The inspector warned us that the old boiler may be operable, but probably not safe. As we did not want to tear up old plaster walls or do work in the “maybe” tenuous attic, we opted for splitters. https://www.fujitsugeneral.com/us/products/split/index.html. We used 6 splitters to start (1 living room, 1 dining room, 1 downstairs master, 1 upstairs front bedroom, 1 upstairs back bedroom and 1 in the upstairs landing). We felt the landing unit would heat and cool the little bathroom and tiny bedroom. We shall see. As there are baseboards in the studio and back bathroom, we thought the one unit in the master would suffice. We are re-thinking that due to the heat from the glorious skylight. I am trying one of the new small portable air conditioners to see if that does the job. Fans seem to help move the air around and who doesn’t love the white noise of a box fan? Shane Robinson and his crew installed the splitters and did their job cleanly and on time.

Painting was a bit tricky. The 100 year old plaster walls in the main part of the house are pretty much held together by the old beautiful but worn wallpaper. After consultation with our fabulously knowledgeable painter and great guy Frank Higgins, we opted to patch areas right over the wallpaper and then paint. In places you can see the wallpaper design. We love that. We do need to install a picture rail hanging system (next on our list).

Unfortunately, the landscaping had grown out of hand and covered the porch and driveway. We enlisted the help of a fine man to remove the tangles, even out the yard, and plant grass seed. He also restored the stairs inside and they are so beautiful. An artist in his own right, he created the wooden stand featured on the home page saying “Music and Art are made here.” He has a facebook page featuring his own art.
